Card Expiry Date Verification Method
Learn the essential methods for verifying card expiry dates and ensure secure transactions.

Testing a card expiry date is one of the quickest ways to confirm that a payment credential is still structurally valid before it reaches an authorization request. The check compares the month and year printed on the card against the current date, rejects impossible months and past years, and returns a clear pass or fail result. This guide explains how the test works, where it fits in an authentication flow, and what it can and cannot prove.
Card Expiry Date Verification Method
An expiry date is a four-character string in most payment systems: two digits for the month and two for the year. The card is treated as valid through the final day of the printed month, and once that month ends the credential is expired. Expiry is not covered by the Luhn algorithm, which validates only the primary account number, so the date check has to be coded separately. A solid implementation also accepts MM/YYYY input, trims stray whitespace and slashes, and applies a fixed two-digit year pivot, usually the current year plus ten. Where tokenization is used, remember that a network token can carry its own expiry date that differs from the one printed on the plastic.
This is a digital reference, so access is delivered immediately after checkout and there is nothing to ship. If the material does not match the description you received, contact support within the stated window and we will arrange a replacement or a refund, whichever you prefer.
Parse the month and year into numbers, confirm the month sits between 1 and 12, then compare the full date against the current month and year. The check passes only when the expiry month is the current month or later.
Common causes are a swapped month and year, a two-digit year interpreted against the wrong pivot, or a processor that has already reissued the credential. Leading zeros and stray spaces are frequent culprits too.
No. It only confirms the format and that the date has not lapsed. Genuine authorization also depends on the account number, security code, and the issuer's response to the transaction.
